Event Information

Title: Understanding and Assessing Climate Risk for Emergency and Security Managers

Description:

Emergency and security managers routinely deal with reducing the operational impacts of physical hazards and ensuring effective mobilization during events.  Many organizations that house emergency and security managers have invested time and resources in evaluating climate vulnerabilities and are moving towards using reducing these risks, including implementing strategies affecting emergency and security strategies.  This presentation will provide a primer on the common methodologies for assessing climate risks (and compared to THIRA) and vulnerabilities across communities and agencies.  We will then outline the benefits and challenges of these methodologies to inform various levels of decision making that affect emergency and security managers, while accounting for uncertainties and confidence associated with the future scenarios.

Learning Objective #1: Expose participants to understanding how climate risks are evaluated

Learning Objective #2: Explore the similarities and differences between climate evaluations compared to traditional risk evaluations

Learning Objective #3: Understand how climate mitigation strategies may be integrated into an emergency and security department as well as the role these departments play in evaluating these climate risks

Type: All Access Education
